Making homemade strawberry liqueur is such a popular kitchen gift to give for the holidays, particularly since it tastes so much better than mass produced products. It's beautiful red/pink color makes it ideal for Christmas and Valentine's gifts.

Be sure to check your berries carefully. Any imperfections will ruin the batch.


Strawberry Liqueur I

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups fresh strawberries
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups 100% proof vodka
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

Directions:

  1. Wash and stem the berries. In a bowl crush the berries and sugar together. Let stand for 1 hour.
  2. Transfer mixture to a clean large (at least two quart) container. Add vodka, water, lemon juice, and zests.
  3. Cover and let stand in a cool dark place for 2 days, shaking several times each day.
  4. When steeping period is complete, strain the resulting liquid through a fine mesh sieve, discarding solids. If that does not filter enough of the mixture for your satisfaction, you can then line the fine mesh sieve with clean cheesecloth or a coffee filter and filter the mixture again.
  5. Transfer the liqueur to a clean container. Cover and let stand for 1 week. Filter liquor into a decorative bottle with a tight fitting lid. Age for at least 1 month before serving.

Strawberry Liqueur II

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 lb very ripe strawberries (wild if possible)
  • 1 (1/2 inch) vanilla bean, crushed
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/3 cups grain alcohol or vodka

Directions:

  1. Wash and stem the berries.
  2. Place in a 2 Quart jar with tight fitting lid. Add the remaining ingredients, seal, and steep for 1 month in a dark place. Gently shake them once or twice a day during this period.
  3. When steeping period is complete, strain the resulting liquid through a fine mesh sieve, discarding solids. If that does not filter enough of the mixture for your satisfaction, you can then line the fine mesh sieve with clean cheesecloth or a coffee filter and filter the mixture again.
  4. Transfer the liqueur to a clean container. Cover and let stand for 1 week. Filter liquor into a decorative bottle with a tight fitting lid. Age for at least 1 month before serving.

  • 4 1/4 cups Rum
  • 4 1/4 cups Vodka
  • 4 cups sugar

  3. Cover and let stand in a cool dark place for 1 week, shaking several times each day.

  5. Transfer the liqueur to a clean container. Cover and let stand for 1 week. Filter liquor into a decorative bottle with a tight fitting lid. Age for at least 1 month before serving.

Strawberry & Cream Liqueur

This is a great recipe because you get instant results - no waiting for months for this one to be done! Because this one has a milk product in it, don't leave it out on the shelf.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 1/2 cups cream base (such as half & half or heavy cream)
  • 2 tsp. strawberry extract
  • 1 cup 80 proof vodka
  • 3/4 cup strawberry syrup
  • 2 drops red food coloring

Directions:

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.
  2. Combine syrup, cream base, vodka and strawberry extract in a sterile 1-quart container.
  3. Add strawberry syrup and food coloring, cover, and shake to mix. Store in refrigerator for up to 1 month.
